Time: 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, LIB 329
Description: In 2010 the iPad appeared, followed in 2011 by a host of other tablet computers. Along with them all came hundreds of thousands of applications – or apps – that can help you do to a wide range of things, from catapulting angry birds at animated pigs, to learning a foreign language, to keeping track of your finances, to studying molecules in 3D, and much more. For instructors (and students), the challenge is figuring out whether a tablet computer can help you teach (or learn) and, if so, which type of tablet – and which apps – will be of greatest benefit. This workshop will provide an overview of the top tablets, in terms of their functionality, cost, available apps, educational potential, and more. The facilitator will have an iPad and Playbook on hand for demonstration purposes; participants who own other types of tablets are encouraged to bring them.

CTE672 Cloud-Based Apps: Opportunities and Risks
Tuesday, March 13, 2012, 3:00 to 4:30 pm, FLEX Lab, LIB 329

Title: CTE672 Cloud-Based Apps: Opportunities and Risks
Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Time: 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, LIB 329
Description: A few years ago, almost all of your computer programs existed in one place: namely, on your computer. That’s changed. Countless programs and apps now reside in the online space known as “The Cloud.” In fact, it’s now possible to be an effective instructor (or student, or researcher) with no programs installed on your computer other than a web browser. There are advantages to using Cloud-based apps – such as Diigo, Dropbox, LinkedIn, Google Docs, WikiMedia, WordPress, Twitter, and so on – but there are also potential risks and concerns. For example, what if you have your students collaborate on an assignment using a wiki, and then the wiki disappears? What should you do if a student tacitly enhances a blog-based assignment after you’ve graded it, and then submits a grade appeal after the course has ended? Is it safe for you to keep confidential notes about a student in a Dropbox folder? This workshop will aim to enlighten participants about the opportunities  and risks associated with cloud-based apps. Presenter: Dr. Mark Morton, CTE

CTE908 Documenting Your Teaching for Tenure and Promotion (for all tenure-track individuals)
Thursday, March 29, 2012, 11:45 am to 1:15 pm, FLEX Lab, LIB 329

Title: CTE908 Documenting Your Teaching for Tenure and Promotion
Date: Thursday, March 29, 2012
Time: 11:45 am to 1:15 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, LIB 329
Description: Tenure and promotion are critical milestones in a faculty member's career. You need to collect evidence and document your successes in research, teaching, and service for various individuals and committees to assess. Although many faculty are well prepared to document their research and even service, evidence of good teaching can be more difficult to provide. At this session, you will hear the experiences of two recently tenured faculty members regarding documenting their teaching, as well as the experiences of one Dean in reviewing tenure files. You will also learn about best practices used at other institutions - primarily the teaching dossier - for you to use or adapt in relation to the criteria identified by your Department Chair or School Director. There will be time for questions throughout the session. Join us for lunch (sponsored by the Education Credit Union) and a chance to find out how others have been successful at documenting their teaching as part of being granted tenure at Waterloo, and network with your colleagues to help build a community that can help support you to your successful tenure application and beyond.

  1. Melissa Barnard (Civil & Environmental Engineering):
Title: Integrating Community Service-Learning into University Courses
Abstract: Community service-learning is defined as “a form of experiential education where learning occurs through cycles of action and reflection as students work with others in applying their knowledge to solve a community problem and reflect upon their experience to gain a deeper understanding of complex issues” (Wilczenski & Coomey, 2007). This workshop will introduce a definition of community service-learning, provide an overview of the essential components of a successful community service-learning program, and describe the steps involved in developing such a program for a university course. Additionally, this workshop will describe some examples of community service-learning projects that have been implemented at the university level.
  2. Rebecca Brookham (Kinesiology):
Title: Techniques to Motivate Students in Higher Education
Abstract: The purpose of this talk is to address current literature surrounding the topic of techniques used to motivate students in higher education. Specifically, this report will emphasize research that highlights empirically supported claims for motivational strategies, such as the use of written feedback, praise, relevance, motivational email messages, group cohesion and the use of internet-based learning techniques.

CTE176 Successful Classroom Management
(formerly Dealing With Classroom Disruptions)
Friday, March 2, 2012, 1:00 to 2:30 pm

Title: CTE176 Successful Classroom Management
(formerly Dealing With Classroom Disruptions)
Date: Friday, March 2, 2012
Time: 1:00 to 2:30 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Description: Have you ever had to deal with disruptions in your classroom, like talkative, confrontational and interruptive students, or students who arrive late and leave early? Most instructors face at least occasional classroom disruptions, with new faculty and teaching assistants being primary targets. Such challenges can be unpleasant and disturbing, but you can help to minimize their frequency and impact.
In this highly interactive workshop you will learn how to prevent disruptions by establishing your credibility, defining classroom expectations, and developing rapport with your students. We will also identify sources and instances of classroom disruptions and will finish by discussing ways to most effectively respond to disruptive situations.
Facilitator: Arash Shahi, CTE
Note(s):

  • Participants will receive an attendance credit if they arrive on time and stay until the end of the event.
  • If you previously attended "Dealing With Classroom Disruptions", you cannot get credit for this workshop again. It is the same workshop that has been renamed.

CTE 222 Identifying Threshold Concepts
Tuesday, March 13, 2012, 1:00 to 2:30 pm

Title: CTE222 Identifying Threshold Concepts
Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Time: 1:00 to 2:30 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Descripton: Why are some course concepts particularly troublesome for students to learn? Meyer and Land (2003) suggest that these may be “threshold concepts”  -- key concepts in our discipline that lead to qualitative transformations in students’ ways of thinking about the discipline and “without which the learner cannot progress”.
In this session, participants will have the opportunity to identify threshold concepts in their course(s). We will explore the ways in which identifying these concepts allows us to examine course content from the students’ perspective.  We will also explore how these insights might influence the course design process.

CTE106 Giving and Receiving Feedback
Monday, March 19, 2012, 10:00 to 11:30 am
Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 10:00 to 11:30 am

Title: CTE106 Giving and Receiving Feedback
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Descripton:Academic work is constantly under review – instructors assess students’ papers, supervisors guide students on theises, or students evaluate instructors teaching, only to name a few examples. In all of these cases, evaluative information is being given to one person by another – feedback has occurred. But was it helpful? Was it assimilated? Will it make a difference in the future?
In this workshop, we will explore how to become better recipients and givers of feedback in the academic setting. We will discuss relevant concepts regarding feedback, then demonstrate strategies and provide tips to help achieve effective feedback communication. You will also have an opportunity to evaluate and discuss sample feedback practices through group work activities.

CTE068 Understanding the Learner
Monday, January 9, 2012, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
(for GS 901)

Title: CTE068 Understanding the Learner
Date: Monday January 9, 2012
Time: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Description: As instructors, we often think about what constitutes effective teaching. But let's put ourselves in our students' shoes for a moment. What constitutes effective learning? How does learning occur and what individual differences affect the teaching and learning process? These are just a few of the questions that will be explored in this CTE event on Understanding the Learner. In this half-day workshop, key theories of learning and a variety of learning styles will be presented and discussed. Participants will identify their own unique learning styles and explore how these characteristics affect their approaches to teaching. The goal of this workshop is to prepare instructors for designing and implementing instructional activities that will maximize student learning.
Due to the highly interactive nature of this workshop, registration is limited to 20 participants for each session.
Facilitator: Svitlana Taraban-Gordon, CTE
Note(s):

  • Response paper required.
  • Limited to 20.
CTE165 Interactive Teaching Activities
Friday, January 20, 2012, 10:00 to 11:30 am
(for GS 901)

Title: CTE165 Interactive Teaching Activities
Date: Friday, January 20, 2012
Time: 10:00 to 11:30 am
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Description:This workshop will focus on helping participants find new ways of integrating interactive teaching activities in their lectures, labs and/or tutorials. While many of us want to include more interactive techniques in our teaching, we are often unsure of what types of activities to use and how to implement them to best facilitate student learning. A variety of interactive activities will be discussed in this workshop and we will explore which types of activities will work best in your classroom, based on your learning goals. The workshop itself will also be highly interactive as you will have the chance to practice some of the learning activities presented as we explore issues such as how to choose, plan, troubleshoot, and evaluate the techniques.
Facilitators: Julia Woodhall, CTE and Chad Gooyers

CTE113 Teaching Dossiers Workshop
Friday, January 27, 2012, 1:00 to 3:00 pm
(for GS 902)

Title: CTE113 Teaching Dossiers Workshop
Date: Friday, January 27, 2012
Time: 1:00 to 3:00 pm
Place: FLEX Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Facilitator: Svitlana Taraban-Gordon, CTE
Description: At this workshop, you will learn what a teaching dossier is and how you can use one. We will analyze two sample dossiers - an activity which you will begin before the workshop - to discover what constitutes an effective dossier. From there, we will turn to the teaching philosophy statement, which is a critical component of the dossier but is also the most difficult to articulate. We will engage in an interactive metaphor exercise to demonstrate one tool that you can use to help create your own philosophy statement. You will receive additional resources at the workshop. To prepare for this workshop, you need to do two tasks:

  1. Read the two sample dossiers (link to be sent) so that you can complete the worksheet (also linked from that message) - bring your responses and the dossiers to the workshop for a group discussion.
  2. Choose a metaphor that describes you as a teacher (i.e., gardener, architect, travel guide) - bring this with you to use in a small group exercise.

CTE146 CUT Research Projects Workshop
Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 1:00 to 3:30 pm
(for GS 902)

Title: CTE146 Research Projects Workshop
Date: Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Time: 1:00 to 3:30 pm
Place: Flex Lab, Porter Library, Rm. 329
Description: At this workshop you will learn what is required for the GS 902 research project component, as well as about research and referencing skills specific to higher education. This workshop is designed to be interactive and to start you on the process of narrowing your research question and identifying the 10 scholarly references needed for your project. You will be taught how to use various search strategies and research databases, and then you will use these strategies during the workshop to find possible resources for your own topic.
To prepare for this workshop, you need to bring a proposed topic for your research project. Ideally it should be based on a question you have had regarding teaching and or learning practices in higher education. Avoid making it too broad (i.e., instead of "motivating students," a more appropriate topic would be "how to establish relevance in a first year course").
This workshop is required for GS 902 participants. It will be offered at least once every term.
Facilitators: Martin Smith, CTE, Tim Ireland, LIB
Note(s):

  • You must be officially registered in GS 902 on Quest to participate in this event.
  • Limited to 20 participants.

CTE196 Teaching Philosophy Statements
Title: CTE196 Teaching Philosophy Statements
Date: Tuesday, March 6
Time:
9:00-10:30 am
Place:
EV1, Rm. 221
Description
: Increasingly, academic job candidates are asked to provide a "teaching statement" or a "statement of teaching philosophy." For many of us, our first attempts at writing such statements seem "cheesy" or inauthentic. However, there is hope, especially if you can link your beliefs to examples from your own practice. At this hands-on workshop you will work on your own teaching philosophy, and tie it to forms of evidence. No prior experience with this form of writing is assumed.
Facilitator: Julie Timmermans, CTE
CTE502 Motivating Students
Title: CTE502 Motivating Students
Date: Thursday, March 8
Time:
9:00 to 10:30am
Place:
EV1, Rm. 221
Description
: Despite our best efforts as teachers, sometimes it is challenging to motivate our students to really learn. They focus more on what will be tested than on how to engage deeply with the subject matter and make it their own. Drawing on motivation theories such as achievement goal orientation, we will explore reasons why our students do not always become as engaged with our courses as we might wish. We will also work together to generate ideas for overcoming motivational obstacles through various course design strategies.
Facilitator: Svitlana Taraban-Gordon, CTE
CTE503 Assessments and Rubrics
Title: CTE503 Assessments and Rubrics
Date: Wednesday, March 7
Time:
3:00 to 4:30 pm
Place :
EV1, Rm. 221
Description
: It is common to think only of assignments, tests, and exams as means of assessing our students’ learning. But are these our only choices? The short answer is no. In this workshop, you will be introduced to principles of effective assessment, then consider various types of both formative and summative assessments that can be applied in different disciplines. You will also learn alternative methods of assessing student learning to increase the available options to choose from in your own course designs.
Facilitator: Svitlana Taraban-Gordon, CTE
CTE504 Interactive Teaching
Title: CTE504 Interactive Teaching
Date: Tuesday, March 6
Time:
10:40 am to 12:10 pm
Place:
EV1, Rm. 221

Description: This session will introduce various techniques that help students to anchor their learning through interactive engagement. Learning theories will be introduced only after techniques are tried by the learners themselves, and chief amongst the objectives will be reflection on how to transfer what is introduced to their actual practice. Discipline-relevant techniques may include Icebreaker Interviews, Physical Poetry, Reaction Sheets/Gallery Walk, Jigsaw, Fishbowl Discussion, and an Exam Review Game. By the end of the session, Postdoctoral Fellows will know at least three new techniques along with when, why and how to implement them. Furthermore, the participants will know where to find and how to select other techniques.
Facilitator: Veronica Brown, CTE
CTE505 Introduction to Course Design
Title: CTE505 Introduction to Course Design
Date: Friday, March 9
Time:
9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Place:
EV1, Rm. 221

Description: Teaching excellence stems in part from careful planning of well-designed courses. In this session, we will explore a course design model that emphasizes the interrelatedness of the various components and sets the stage for the various sessions that are listed for the rest of the week’s programming. Key focus will be placed on learning about ourselves as teachers, understanding our students and what motivates them, assessing student learning, teaching so that students can do the assessments, aligning course designs with objectives, and reflecting on and researching our practice as teachers.
