The scholarship of teaching and learning views teaching as more than the transmission of knowledge. Learning is the active construction of knowledge by students; teaching creates the opportunities, capabilities, and motivation for this learning to occur. A scholarly approach to teaching engages faculty – and students – in research to develop, evaluate, and share advances for learning.

Contributions to advancing knowledge through our research into student learning include conducting assessments of the impacts of teaching practices on learning outcomes and developing research-based innovations in teaching. These contributions are explored and disseminated through the Teaching-Based Research Group, the annual Opportunities and New Directions conference, and publications and presentations.

The Teaching-Based Research Group (TBRG) is a multi-disciplinary community of researchers from all six Faculties at the University of Waterloo committed to fostering systematic inquiry into the impact of teaching innovations on student learning processes and outcomes. The goal of the TBRG is to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning as a vital part of the research mission of the University.

Membership in the Teaching Based Research Group is open to UW faculty members and lecturers interested in taking a research-based approach to enhancing learning outcomes in their undergraduate or graduate courses. Cross-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional research initiatives are also welcome. Topics of interest may, for example, include making changes in instructional methods, learning resources and curricula, and assessing their impact on student learning processes and outcomes. Other activities include assessing students’ learning experiences and ways to improve them; developing innovations in teaching methods and conducting classroom-focused  research studies on student learning; and reviewing teaching-related conference papers, journal articles, books and learning objects upon request.

Expertise is available to assist faculty to design and implement studies in their classroom settings. These are normally designed to be as non-intrusive as possible, that is, such studies are integrated into ongoing teaching and learning activities over the duration of a given course. To begin a research project or to find out more about teaching based research, please contact Julie Timmermans from the Centre for Teaching Excellence.
